the coral reef wall. \u00a0The size of a mini-football, the colors were spectacular. \u00a0Gold, purple and blue &#8211; I&#8217;ve never seen one like it before!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially named <em>Asthenosoma varium<\/em>, it is known for venomous spines (causing significant and prolonged pain), it is often home to commensal shrimps and crabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"scuba-b4-h2-2\" photos that I realized I had captured two different species. &nbsp;<em>Trachyrhamphus bicoarctatus<\/em> (above) and the more colourful&nbsp;<em>Corythoichthys haematopterus<\/em> href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobtail_squid\">Bobtail Squid<\/a> (Euprymna berryi) during a single <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/night-diving-ultimate-guide\/\">night dive<\/a>. &nbsp;One was about 1cm..the other was smaller!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/subic-bobtail-squid-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobtail Squid are actually a large family of squid, from the order <em>Sepiolida<\/em><strong>. <\/strong>There are about 80 sub-species, which can be recognized by their small round body and lack of cuttle bone (<em>they are actually closer related to cuttlefish than squid<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/subic-bobtail-squid.jpg\"><img Bobtail Squid are famous for their splendid colours! &nbsp; This is due to their relationship with a symbiotic luminescent bacteria, that lives within a ventral pouch on the squid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 photogenic and easy to spot in the dark, as they climb up onto the higher spots of the coral. &nbsp;There was also an Orangutan Crab.. but 274 photos into the diving day had drained my battery &#8211;
