Being alone underwater can cause many divers apprehension.&nbsp; It often also ends in an aborted dive&nbsp; &#8211; which sucks when you&#8217;ve spent your hard-earned money, time, and effort in going scuba diving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddy separation can be avoided by using effective diving procedures and maintaining a focused <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/technical-diver-traits-personality-factors-and-dive-safety\/\">mindset<\/a> (<em>more about that another day<\/em>).&nbsp; should be agreed upon before the dive (as part of dive planning).&nbsp; This is especially applicable to buddy separation scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If one diver is primarily lead\/navigating the dive, then they will be the diver to retrace their steps and reunite the team\/pair. The other diver will remain static &#8211; observe and, where possible, aid discovery by highlighting themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Being-Visible\"><\/span><strong>Being Visible. <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can highlight yourself by; rotating a light 360 degrees, partially <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/smb-dsmb-scuba-diving\/\">deploying a DSMB<\/a> above your head (with a very slight amount of air in it), etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Search-Timing\"><\/span><strong>Search Timing. <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team has a pre-set amount of time to be re-united. The &#8216;default&#8217; time is 1 minute unless otherwise planned. When that time expires, both divers will begin a <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/is-solo-diving-safe\/\">solo<\/a> ascent whilst maintaining observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ascent-Protocols\"><\/span><strong>Ascent Protocols.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to establish a <em>protocol<\/em> for the ascent in your contingency dive planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One big question is whether or not to complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/difference-safety-stops-decompression-stop-scuba-diving\/\">safety stop<\/a>. This could be an easy &#8216;yes&#8217; or &#8216;no&#8217;.&nbsp; Or it could be set against flexible criteria, such as;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a) If less than 10min NDL do a safety stop \/ If more than 10min NDL don&#8217;t do a safety stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b) If more than 20min bottom time perform a safety stop \/ If less than 20min NDL don&#8217;t do a safety stop. etc etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On-the-Surface\"><\/span><strong>On the Surface. <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon reaching the surface, the divers continue observation.
