The regs (Apeks Tek3) were functional and clean. The 1st and 2nd stages had been quickly inspected the day before. They had both been serviced within 12 months. The cylinders and cylinder valves were fine (tested with other regs). We had completed an &#8216;S-Drill&#8217; on the <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/best-technical-diving-computer\/\">descent<\/a> and his regulators breathed &#8216;OK&#8217; if a little resistant (I assumed he had &#8216;dialled down&#8217; the venturi\/flow on the 2nd stages to prevent free-flow).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the descent progressed, the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/immersion-pulmonary-edema-oedema-ipe-ipo\/\">breathing<\/a> increased until (~18m)\u00a0it became virtually impossible to breathe. I verified this by breathing both (long and short hose) regulators myself. The work of breathing was enormous and unsustainable. \u00a0I checked his valves, checked his hoses for kinks, checked inside the 2nd stages and confirmed the regs purged on demand. \u00a0All was fine. These have dramatically impeded gas flow into the 2nd stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"892\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/11745567_1032789553399785_2025417337105449322_n.jpg\" alt=\"Regulator hose diving emergency\" class=\"wp-image-4351\" title=\"Regulator hose diving emergency\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/11745567_1032789553399785_2025417337105449322_n.jpg 892w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/11745567_1032789553399785_2025417337105449322_n-278x300.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This plastic debris was attributed to degradation inside the regulator hoses, which were (un-named, pending confirmation of brand) nylon-braid type. It is believed that these hoses have a plastic lining inside the hose which breaks down over time, under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various explanations were offered; hose O2 compatibility, hardened lubricant, UV damage from sun exposure or material ejected from a 1st stage plug assembly (HP seat)\u00a0failure. \u00a0However, the best theory seemed to be that of polymorphism on the hose lining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Polymorphic-crystallization\"><\/span>Polymorphic crystallization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The chemical process of &#8216;Polymorphic Crystallization&#8217; has been suggested as the cause of the &#8216;debris&#8217; inside the regulator hoses that caused an out-of-gas emergency this week. &nbsp;This process is explained scientifically&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.chemistry.msu.edu\/faculty\/reusch\/VirtTxtJml\/physprop.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HERE: Intermolecular Forces &#8211; Polymorphism<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is basically the same process that makes chocolate discoloured and &#8216;brittle&#8217; once it has been melted and then re-cooled. &nbsp;&#8220;..<em>. common example of changes in polymorphism is shown by chocolate that has suffered heating and\/or long storage. Over time, or when it resets after softening, it may have white patches on it, no longer melts in your mouth,..<\/em>. &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When materials are warmed, and then cooled it can be effected the molecular structure of the material; raising its melting point and reducing flexibility. &nbsp;So, if the hoses\/regs were stored indoors, but in tropical heat, but were dived frequently where compressed gas flow cooled them&#8230;. then there is a good chance that polymorphic crystallization had affected the inner lining of the hoses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the failed hoses were not available for inspection as I write this article (more photos\/details to come), so I decided to inspect a Low-Pressure Inflator (LPI) hose that was from the same batch and on the same rig<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-4352\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"944\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/10671269_1032789596733114_4671692440910993866_n.jpg\" alt=\"nylon crystals in scuba regulator hose\" class=\"wp-image-4352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/10671269_1032789596733114_4671692440910993866_n.jpg 944w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/10671269_1032789596733114_4671692440910993866_n-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plastic particles block the regulator&#8217;s 2nd stage and restrict airflow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LPI-Hose-Autopsy\"><\/span>LPI Hose Autopsy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The nylon-braided low-pressure inflator (LPI) hose was part of the same batch, bought from a company in Italy, and had been on the rig for the same amount of time (~3 years) as the failed regulator hoses. \u00a0It looked to be in perfect working condition&#8230; &#8216;shiny and new&#8217;. \u00a0There was nothing unusual about the feel of the hose either &#8211; it was flexible and nothing &#8216;chunky&#8217; was evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On cutting open the hose, it was immediately apparent that the hose lining catastrophically deteriorated. Gas flow through the LPI must have been decreased, but because of the lower pressures\/gas flow involved, those pieces of hose lining had not been forced down the hose to cause a complete blockage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-4356\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1078\" height=\"1089\" src=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1437875329132.jpg\" alt=\"scuba diving regulator hose failure\" class=\"wp-image-4356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1437875329132.jpg 1078w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1437875329132-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1437875329132-1013x1024.jpg 1013w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cutting open an LPI hose to find catastrophic deterioration to the hose&#8217;s inner lining.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of hose deterioration is an insidious danger. The hoses can look and feel perfect externally&#8230;.but be dangerously degraded inside. No damage was evident and it didn&#8217;t leak.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since initially publishing details of this incident, I have heard from several other dive professionals who have also encountered regulator hose liner deterioration. &nbsp;All accounts occurred with braided-nylon regulator hoses. &nbsp;I have heard no reports of this happening with rubber hoses &#8211; but that doesn&#8217;t mean it won&#8217;t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Please be aware of this diving emergency issue with nylon braided regulator hoses and share this article to raise awareness!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Lessons To Be Shared<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regulator hoses have a finite lifetime, and the speed of deterioration depends on both usage and storage conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heat fluctuations (Warm-Cool \/ Cool-Warm) damage the molecular structure in plastics and rubbers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regulator hoses may appear fine externally but might have deteriorated significantly inside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hose deterioration can lead to Out-of-Gas emergencies without warning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay close attention to any changes in gas flow\/work of breathing through your regulators (and LPI).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct S-Drills* on the descent and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">resolve<\/span> any &#8216;work-of-breathing&#8217; issues before continuing your descent.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>* <em>S-Drill &#8211; Divers pause their descent at 5m depth and each diver physically demonstrates that they have donatable air by offering their long hose, whilst breathing from their backup short hose. Recreational divers can utilize this concept by donating their AAS.
