But did you know that small bubbles form in your body during every dive ascent? These tiny bubbles are called micro-bubbles and are smaller than red blood cells. While they don&#8217;t cause physical injury, in sufficient numbers they can trigger an immune-response that leads to <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/subclinical-dcs-decompression-stress-fatigue\/\">post-dive fatigue<\/a>. That fatigue is known as &#8216;decompression stress&#8217; and is considered a sub-clinical form of DSC.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article explores what causes micro-bubbles and how they connect to sub-clinical DCS and decompression stress. I will explain how you perform diving ascents influences off-gassing efficiency and micro-bubble elimination. These micro-bubbles are also called &#8216;silent bubbles&#8217; or &#8216;micro-emboli&#8217;. However, these micro-bubbles are insufficiently large to cause us immediate physical injury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These mico-bubbles form when the pressure surrounding us becomes lower than the pressure of nitrogen absorbed within our body during a dive. This <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/gradient-factors-m-values\/\">difference in pressure is called supersaturation<\/a>. A greater <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/gradient-factors-dummies\/\">difference in pressure causes more bubbles<\/a> to form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The algorithm used in your dive computer calculates to prevent large bubbles from forming. In turn, this protects you from DCS injury. However, small bubbles, that don&#8217;t cause injury, are not a factor in most dive computer algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decompression models used in dive tables and computers assign a maximum value (<a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/understanding-m-values-eric-baker\/\">m-value<\/a><em>)<\/em> to ascent supersaturation. Consequently, this limit prevents micro-bubbles from growing to a size that causes clinically diagnoseable harm (<em>symptomatic DCS<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some modern decompression models, known as &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/varying-permeability-model-vpm-for-dummies\/\">bubble-models<\/a>&#8216;, also include calculations that reduce the number of fast tissue micro-bubbles. They do this by pausing ascent at a deeper depth. However, the diver absorbs more nitrogen because they stayed deeper for longer. This is because your body will <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/dcs-immune-complement-diving\/\">react to those micro-bubbles with an immune response<\/a>. A greater number of bubbles causes a stronger reaction from your body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When micro-bubbles trigger a strong immune response, you might observe the following symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/why-does-diving-make-me-feel-tired\/\">Post-dive fatigue<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malaise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced vitality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drowsiness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms are called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/subclinical-dcs-decompression-stress-fatigue\/\">sub-clinical DCS<\/a>&#8220;. It is therefore hardly surprising that there can be a poorly defined boundary between wellness and mild DCI following diving. I\u2019m&nbsp;not a technical diver, Lord knows; but I see a lot of these guys. I send them out with&nbsp;decompression tables and they tell me what happens. Large numbers of tiny bubbles are believed to cause inflammatory damage to the endothilial tissues of the veinous system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, brain lesions may be caused over repeated occurences of sub-clinical DCS. This is because white blood cells attempt to fight the micro-bubbles. As the bubbles disspitate, the resulting clots migrate through the body and many end up stuck in the brain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Micro-bubbles-and-sub-clinical-DCS\"><\/span>Micro-bubbles and sub-clinical DCS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Micro-bubbles have to reach a sufficient size before causing symptoms of DCS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A large quantity of micro-bubbles will cause an <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/decompression-sickness-immune-system\/\">immune system<\/a> response. Historically, the symptoms of sub-clinical DCS were used by technical divers to analyze the effectiveness of their decompression ascent profiles. More recently, decompression stress is measured by literally counting bubbles using Doppler ultrasound after diving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;\u2026we know that bubbles are probably present after most dives, so we don\u2019t have to exceed an <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/understanding-m-values-eric-baker\/\">M-value<\/a> to produce bubbles in the absence of DCS.
