They&#8217;ve got the good gear. They&#8217;ve done reputable courses. They talk about diving philosophies. They advocate for better diving training and improved dive safety. They&#8217;ve been there, done that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of those divers are legitimately prestigious. Others are pretenders to the crown: they are <em>prestige seekers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-motivates-a-prestige-diver\"><\/span>What motivates a prestige diver?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many motivations that drive divers to pursue higher level, more advanced qualifications and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons why advanced divers are attracted to one agency, methodology, or equipment brand over another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some divers undertake further training and more ambitious dives because they enjoy challenges. \u00a0And that&#8217;s just fine for so long as the challenge they seek is about making themselves a better diver, who is more competent, knowledgeable, and skilful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some divers have a passion for exploration. And that&#8217;s okay also, for so long as they are exploring progressively. \u00a0For example, if a diver has explored all the local wrecks under 40m\/130ft depth, then they are justified in a need to extend their diving capabilities to access new wrecks lying at deeper depths.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very few advanced divers are &#8220;thrill seekers&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technical, wreck and cave diving is just not that &#8216;thrilling&#8217;, <em>in the adrenaline sense<\/em>,&nbsp; as an extreme sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prestige-seekers-versus-prestige-divers\"><\/span>Prestige seekers versus prestige divers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What I DO see often is&nbsp;<em><strong>prestige seekers<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This encapsulates a specific diver motivation &#8211; that being, to appear as elite or superior amongst the diving community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If a qualification level is perceived to be prestigious, then there are always those who will seek it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If conducting a challenging dive might be considered &#8216;reputation building&#8217; there will always be those who&#8217;ll do it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If an agency or philosophical approach is deemed to be &#8216;elite&#8217;, there will always be those who want the association with it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If following a specific approach, or displaying a given image might garner prestige, there will always be those who strive for that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a particular equipment brand is identified by cost or association, there will be those who choose it for the status value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be under no illusions that technical and cave diving is often seen as&nbsp;<em>prestigious<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even within that tech community, there are sub-groups deemed as&nbsp;<em>more prestigious&nbsp;<\/em>when viewed from below.&nbsp; Full <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/why-do-deep-divers-use-helium\/\">Trimix<\/a> qualification&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/sidemount-diving-techniques\/\">sidemount<\/a> CCR units&#8230; certain &#8216;elite&#8217; agencies&#8230; shipwrecks that are described as the &#8216;Mt Everest of scuba diving&#8217;&#8230;. you get the idea&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples-of-prestige-seeking-in-diving\"><\/span>Examples of prestige seeking in diving<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The card-collectors who race from one qualification to the next to &#8216;reach the top&#8217;, whether that is a <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/divemaster-dive-guide-difference\/\">divemaster<\/a>, instructor or technical trimix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recreational dive professionals who get bent or drown trying to join the &#8216;Arch Club&#8217; in Dahab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Guy Garman, who perished in his 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/guy-garman-world-depth-record-fatal-dive\/\">world depth record<\/a> attempt having completed less than 400-lifetime total dives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diver throws caution to the wind, racing to &#8216;reach 100m&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More-subtle-examples-of-the-wannabe-prestige-diver\"><\/span>More subtle examples of the wannabe prestige diver<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Social-media-posing\"><\/span>Social media posing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We see those &#8216;carefully staged&#8217; &nbsp;diving skills photos all over tech diving forums and Facebook groups. &nbsp;Is that the true purpose of perfecting our trim and buoyancy? &nbsp;Is that really why we seek better equipment configurations? &nbsp;Or is it about establishing a status, a right to comment&#8230; an authority to criticize others? &nbsp;A measure of personal prestige. For some, it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/buying-scuba-equipment-guide.jpg\" alt=\"buying-scuba-equipment-guide\" class=\"wp-image-5166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/buying-scuba-equipment-guide.jpg 320w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/buying-scuba-equipment-guide-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zero-to-hero-and-fast-track-training\"><\/span>Zero-to-hero and fast-track training<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What about the &#8216;zero-to&#8217;hero&#8217; diving instructor? Or the &#8216;fast-track&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/what-is-technical-diving\/\">technical diving<\/a> instructor? &nbsp;Or the &#8216;2-day&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/how-to-choose-the-best-sidemount-instructor\/\">sidemount instructor<\/a>? &nbsp;Is that really a motivation stemming from an unquenchable desire to educate others? Does it arise from a long-held and fervent passion for diving? &nbsp;Is it because diving instruction is a lucrative and profitable employment? (don&#8217;t laugh!). Are they prudently and patiently <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/technical-diving-training-goals\/\">setting goals for their diving development<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"693\" src=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/eating-the-DIR-kool-aid.jpg\" alt=\"prestigious diver kool aid dir\" class=\"wp-image-5588\" title=\"prestige divers kool aid dir\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/eating-the-DIR-kool-aid.jpg 680w, https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/eating-the-DIR-kool-aid-294x300.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-elite-agency-snob\"><\/span>The elite agency snob<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What about those &#8216;elite&#8217; agencies? \u00a0There&#8217;s some exclusivity there.. it&#8217;s more expensive training and the &#8216;required&#8217; equipment brand labels are much more costly. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It suits those inclined to &#8216;pay for the best&#8217;; \u00a0a perceived aquatic equivalent to Rolex, Ferrari and Prada. \u00a0Of course, many divers identify <a href=\"https:\/\/scubatechphilippines.com\/scuba_blog\/scuba-diving-deliberate-practice\/\">good training<\/a> with a motivation to increase diving safety. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some, the reasons are far more superficial. \u00a0Prestige provides the opportunity to look down at others and empowers an illusion of superiority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reaching-the-apex-as-a-prestige-diver\"><\/span>Reaching the apex as a prestige diver<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When divers seek prestige and status, they set themselves a goal to achieve what they consider is the apex of diving. Once reached, they discover there&#8217;s <em>always<\/em> something bigger and better to pursue.\u00a0 There&#8217;s potentially no end to it &#8211; \u00a0until;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The money runs out (<em>common<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Someone with ethics and responsibility is successful in counseling the diver (<em>rare<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<em>consequences<\/em>&nbsp;eventually bite a diver in the ass (<em>tragic<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many different motivations for doing further training, choosing an agency or conducting challenging dives.&nbsp; Some indicate a positive mindset towards development for tangible reasons.
